Situated on a height of the Tiber Valley, Fiano Romano was an important city, with even a port.
Perhaps founded by the Flavian family (from here the name), soon it became part of the powerful Abbey of Farfa. Later it belonged among others the important families of Colonna and Orsini.
There is uncertainty about the foundation of Fiano Romano, scholars are divided between two interpretations: the first identifies the birth of Fiano like event after the defeat occurred at the beginning of the fourth century BC by the Romans of the Etruscan city of Capena, in the territory of which was also on the current Fiano, and this led the people to spread in small settlements on the nearby hills where they founded several centers. For others, however, Capena surrendered to the Romans and Fiano would develop after the fall of the religious center of Lucus Feronia. The local population, to escape the barbarian invasions sought refuge in the surrounding hills forming settlements from which originated the current city.
Fiano Romano is an important archaeological center that testifies one of the most fortunate and splendid Roman civilization. Just in the area it had been erected a temple dedicated to the goddess Feronia, pagan god protector of flocks and fertility. Another witness is the villa Volusii.
The ducal castle Orsini, however, overlooking the ancient urban center was built starting in 1493 by Count Nicholas III Orsini. Inside visitors can tour several rooms that keep the original appearance.
